Deductible exposure explorer
Shows exactly how one loss splits between you and your insurer at each deductible level, and how much more of a loss you carry when you raise it.
- What it needs from you
- One realistic loss amount, and the deductible levels you are offered
- What you get back
- Who pays what at each level, charted and tabulated
Result
Who pays what, at each level
Enter a loss above and the split appears here. Nothing is assumed about the size of your claim, because the whole answer depends on it.
Deliberately not shown
What a higher deductible saves you is the one thing this will not print
It depends on rate filings this site does not hold, and every figure we could print there would be a guess wearing a decimal point.
The real answer takes one phone call. Ask your insurer to quote the same policy at each of these deductibles, then weigh the difference against the extra exposure above.

Methodology
How this tool works, and what it will not tell you
For each deductible level, the amount you pay is the smaller of the loss and the deductible, and the amount the insurer pays is the loss minus the deductible, held at zero. Those two figures always add up to the loss you entered. The difference between consecutive levels is the extra money you would find yourself paying on a loss of that size. This tool produces no premium, no quote and no savings figure. Pricing depends on rate filings and underwriting data this site does not hold, so any number we printed there would be invented. We would rather show you the arithmetic we can stand behind. That is the reason this tool does not tell you what raising your deductible would save in premium: the honest answer is that we do not know, and the number is easy to get from your own insurer by asking for both quotes.
Assumptions
- One covered loss, with one deductible applying to it.
- The loss is fully covered above the deductible, with no policy limit reached and no coinsurance.
- The default levels in the form are round starting figures, not a survey of what carriers offer.
Limitations
- No premium and no premium savings. Estimating what a deductible change costs or saves needs filed rate data this site does not hold.
- Real policies apply deductibles in ways this arithmetic does not model: percentage deductibles on wind and hurricane, separate deductibles per peril, per-claim versus annual, and deductibles that are waived for some losses.
- Liability coverage usually has no deductible at all, so this tool says nothing about that part of a policy.
- It cannot tell you whether you could actually absorb the higher figure. That is a question about your savings, not about insurance.
This tool cites no outside source, because it adds up the numbers you type and nothing else. Where a figure comes from somewhere, the figure carries the citation.
